DAVIDSON, N.C.  — Freshman David Hager won his seventh singles match of the season, but it was the only team point Davidson was able to get as it fell to UNCG Wednesday, 6-1, at the Covington Tennis Courts in non-conference men's tennis action.
Â
Playing their second straight former Southern Conference opponent, the Wildcats fell to 11-5 overall. They had dropped a 6-1 decision to Wofford last week that snapped their season-high 10 match win streak.
Â
Hager ran his singles record to 7-4, including 5-1 at No. 5 where he scored a 6-2, 6-4 decision over Warren Bryan of the Spartans.
Â
The freshman also teamed up with fellow classmate Artem Khrapko at No. 3 doubles to net an 8-5 win to push their record to a team-best 8-4 on the season.
Â
It was a tight battle at doubles as the Spartan (7-7) won the No. 1 spot, 8-2, with the final match at No. 2 coming down to a tie-breaker. UNCG prevailed to grab the first team point and used that momentum to earn wins in five of the six singles positions to seal up the victory.
Â
J.B. Gough was the closest to scoring Davidson another team point at No. 3 singles, earning a 6-3 first-set win, before he fell in the second set in a tie-breaker. With the team match already decided, he and his Spartan opponent played a super tie-breaker where the sophomore fell 10-5, dropping just his fourth match in 16 played this season.
Â
The 'Cats return to Atlantic 10 play for their next match, traveling to play Richmond this weekend, March 28, at 4 p.m.
