Appalachian State Prevails Over Davidson Wrestling in Regular Season Finale

DAVIDSON, N.C. – Davidson and Appalachian State split eight of the 10 contested bouts, but injuries forced the Wildcats to forfeit two, allowing the Mountaineers to win, 23-15, in Southern Conference wrestling action Sunday Afternoon in Belk Arena.
Freshman Nathaniel Powers scored a pin in 4 minutes, 6 seconds at 157 pounds to give Davidson (6-14, 1-6 SoCon) a 12-9 lead at the halfway point of the match. However, Appalachian State (8-6, 5-2 SoCon) answered with major decisions from Zachary Strickland at 165 pounds and Collin Hedash at 174 pounds to take a 17-12 lead. Junior Scott Patrick won his fourth straight match with a takedown in the final seconds for a thrilling 5-4 decision over Jake Johnson at 184, but the 'Cats had to forfeit at 197 pounds, which sealed the match.
Davidson also forfeited at 125 pounds and lost a decision at 133 pounds to fall into a 9-0 hole early. Senior Matt Zarth made the most of his final match in Belk Arena though, forcing overtime at 141 pounds by virtue of earning the riding time point over App's William Johnson, who only tallied one escape in regulation. Neither wrestler scored in the first three overtime rounds, before Zarth finally scored a takedown in the second sudden victory period for the 3-1 victory.
Sophomore Kevin Birmingham also earned a decision for Davidson, following Zarth at 149 pounds with a 9-8 victory.
Davidson will compete in the Southern Conference Championships at VMI on March 9.
