Davidson Defeated by Appalachian State in Wrestling Regular Season Finale

BOONE, N.C. – Junior Matt Zarth opened the match with a pin but Davidson ultimately fell to Appalachian State in the regular season finale for both teams, 39-10, in Southern Conference wrestling action Sunday in Varsity Gymnasium.
At 125 pounds, Zarth pinned Tony Gravely in 3:31 to give Davidson (3-14, 0-6 SoCon) an early 6-0 lead, but Appalachian State (13-4, 6-0 SoCon) claimed eight of the remaining nine matches, earning bonus points in each. Freshman Kevin Birmingham earned the 'Cats' other win at 149 pounds, earning a 12-3 major decision against Aaron Scott.
Chip Powell scored a win by fall at 157 pounds for the Mountaineers, while No. 15 Kyle Blevins earned a technical fall at 165 pounds. No. 11 Austin Trotman won by forfeit at 184 pounds, and the Wildcats also surrendered the heavyweight bout.
Davidson will compete in the SoCon Championship tournament March 3 in Chattanooga, Tenn.
