Box Score

GREENVILLE, S.C. – Chandler Ambrester tallied a match-high 11 kills to lead the Furman Paladins to a 3-0 (25-13, 25-11, 25-18) win over the Davidson Wildcats Tuesday night in SoCon volleyball action at Alley Gymnasium.

Ambrester was the only hitter in double figures, while Furman (10-8, 4-2 SoCon) also got eight kills from Natalie Braun. Kelly Kirby and Carolyn Nicoletti had 18 and 13 assists, respectively. Kirby also led the defense with eight digs.

Senior outside hitter Sarabeth Peele led Davidson (12-10, 3-2 SoCon) with eight kills and junior opposite Erin Lupfer added seven. Senior setter Hayley Lawson tallied 19 assists, and senior libero Jennifer Chamblee paced the defense with seven digs.

Furman took a 3-1 lead to open the match, but Davidson kept the set close early. A pair of kills from Peele and one from senior middle blocker Jorden Benedict made it 5-3 in favor of the Paladins, and the Wildcats held the margin through the first half of the set, trailing 10-8 on a kill from Lupfer. Furman, though, opened the set up with a 7-0 run to take a 19-10 lead until Peele put one down to break up the run. The Paladins closed out the set with a 5-3 run to take the 25-13 win in the opening frame.

The Paladins won the first four points in the second set, before Jorden Benedict's block gave Davidson its first. Furman pushed its lead to 7-1 before a service error by Elle Ross gave possession back to the 'Cats. A kill from junior middle blocker Madison Benedict made it 10-4 for Furman, but the Paladins used a 7-3 run to open a 17-7 lead and another 5-0 run to get a set point at 24-11. Lupfer helped Davidson survive, but Furman took a 2-0 lead in the match with the 25-11 win.

The two teams traded points to start the final set before Furman opened a 5-2 lead. Peele's first kill gave Davidson the ball, and a Furman hitting error and a successful setter dump by Lawson knotted the score at five. The Wildcats took their first lead, 7-6, on a Paladin error and would extend it to 10-7 on a kill from Lupfer and a block by Madison Benedict, freshman outside hitter Caroline Brown and Lupfer. Furman stalled Davidson's momentum with a 5-0 run to take a one-point, 11-10 lead, and the teams battled from there. Trailing 15-13, Davidson got the set knotted again on a Furman error and a kill from Jorden Benedict, but the 'Cats couldn't get over the hump. Peele's eighth kill put Furman's lead at 20-17, but the Paladins closed the match with a 5-1 run for the 25-18 win.

Wrapping up a three-match road stand, the Wildcats will return to Belk Arena for the next three matches, starting with Elon at 2 p.m. Saturday.
