DAVIDSON, N.C. -- College of Charleston's Jade Hughes stole a misguided Wildcat pass with 25 seconds left and drove down the floor for a layup to give the Cougars a one-point lead and Sarah Moye hit two free throws in the last 10 seconds to seal the game as Davidson saw its perfect run in the Southern Conference come to an end with a 74-71 setback despite a career-best 30 points from senior Mercedes Robinson on Monday evening at John M. Belk Arena.
The Wildcats had one last chance to tie the game when they drove up the floor after Moye's two free throws, but Robinson's three-point try from the right wing with three ticks left fell short to send Davidson to 7-1 in SoCon play. Overall, the 'Cats saw their four-game win streak come to an end, dropping them to 8-9 on the year.
College of Charleston, who had four players hit for double digits in points, improved to 10-5 overall and evened its SoCon mark at 4-4. The win also helped the Cougars stop their 13-game losing streak to the Wildcats in the all-time series.
Hughes' 19 points led the way for the Cougars, but her last four were the biggest with two points coming at the charity stripe at the 3:54 mark that brought CofC to within three at 71-68, and then her layup off the Wildcat turnover gave the Cougars' the lead and eventually was the game-winner.
In all, the Cougars used a 16-4 run in the final six minutes of the game to turn a 67-58 Wildcat lead into the three-point win.
Davidson led by as many as nine points on five different occasions in the second half, but could never shake the Cougars. The 'Cats were also done in by costly turnovers and missed opportunities in the last 5:47 of the game as they scored just four points. They coughed the ball up five times in that stretch and missed four shots.
Prior to the last six minutes, Davidson had hit 14 of its 22 attempts in the half. The 'Cats did close the game hitting half of its field goals (25-50) for a season-best 50 percent.
Robinson did all she could to keep the Wildcats within striking distance of the Cougars in the first half, and then helped them take the lead in the second period. She drained a career-best 12-of-21 shots from the floor, including a couple of treys, and hit all four free throws on her way to the 30-point effort. The senior just missed her sixth straight double-double, finishing with a game-high eight boards.

Junior Julia Paquette and Ashley Lax gave the Wildcats three double-figure scorers with 12 and 11 points, respectively.
It was a tale of two halves as College of Charleston led the majority of the first period, until two Lax free throws in the last five seconds gave the Wildcats a one-point halftime lead (38-37) that it would hold until the final 25 seconds.
The Cougars opened the game hitting 10 of their first 16 shots to grab a 10-point advantage at 27-17 with 7:10 left in the period. CofC closed the first period shooting 53.8 percent from the field, including 4-of-10 from behind the arc.
Davidson began to chip away behind Robinson, who scored 10 of her 17 first-half points after the Cougars jumped out the 27-17 lead to help bring the 'Cats within six (37-31) at the 2:40 mark. Two free throws by Lax and a three-ball from Alex Thompson brought the score to 37-36, before Lax added her final two free throws with five seconds.
The Wildcats take to the road for their next two contests, starting first with a trip to Chattanooga, Jan. 17, at 5 p.m.
