DAVIDSON, N.C. – Senior Jason Richards scored 24 to top the 1,000-point mark for his career and lead Davidson to a 68-55 men's basketball victory over Appalachian State on Senior Night in front of a sellout crowd of 5,838 Wednesday in Belk Arena.
The victory improved Davidson's winning streak to 18 games, the longest in the nation, and improved its conference winning streak to 29 games.
Richards was 9-for-17 from the floor and 2-for-5 from 3-point range and added six assists to lead the Wildcats (22-6, 19-0 SoCon).
Fellow senior Thomas Sander collected six points and a team-high seven rebounds, while Boris Meno had four points and three boards. Sophomore Stephen Curry scored 17 points to go along with six rebounds and five steals.
Donte Minter led Appalachian State (17-12, 12-7 SoCon) with 19 points and eight boards, while Ryann Abraham scored 15 points.
The Wildcats defense put on another excellent performance, forcing 19 turnovers and turning them into 21 points. Davidson shot 39.7 percent from the floor but committed just six turnovers, and that differential helped Davidson get 68 shots to the Mountaineers' 42.
Leading 38-33 early in the second half, Richards scored four points in an 8-0 run that gave Davidson a 46-33 cushion with 15:33 remaining.
After Appalachian State trimmed the margin to 50-45, Richards and Curry struck for 10 straight points to give Davidson a 60-45 cushion with 6:25 remaining. Richards capped that run with a layup, which put him over the 1,000-point plateau. The Mountaineers would get no closer than 11 points the rest of the way.
Game Notes: It was Davidson's 17th straight win in Belk Arena… The attendance set a record for a league game in Belk Arena, besting the crowd of 5,580, set against Appalachian State last season… Curry reached double figures for the 55th consecutive contest… Davidson is 32-3 in the month of February since 2003-04.
